Introduction

Corona virus belongs to a large family of viruses that have the potential to cause diseases ranging from the usual cold to acute ailments such as MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) and SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).

Corona virus disease 2019, or COVID-19, is a disease caused by a corona virus, a common virus that can cause what doctors call a respiratory tract infection. It can affect your upper respiratory tract (sinuses, nose, and throat) or lower respiratory tract (windpipe and lungs). Most corona viruses aren’t dangerous.

In early 2020, following a December 2019 outbreak in China, the World Health Organization identified a new type of corona virus. Officials named this new virus severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This is the virus that causes COVID-19.

The outbreak quickly spread around the world. It spreads the same way other coronaviruses do, mainly through person-to-person contact. Infections range from mild to serious.

Who are prone to getting this virus?

The corona virus that passes from cats to humans are seen to cause “Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome”, while the virus that gets transmitted from camels to humans, are seen to cause Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. A majority of people who are initially infected by this virus worked or shopped in the Hunan seafood wholesale market (situated in the central location in China).

What Are the Symptoms of COVID-19?

Early symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

The virus can lead to pneumonia, respiratory failure, septic shock, and death. If you notice these severe symptoms in yourself or a loved one, get medical attention right away:

  • Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
  • Ongoing chest pain or pressure
  • New confusion
  • Can’t wake up
  • Bluish lips or face
